The Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage — its 33 temples and the bangai
西国三十三所
The Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage is a collection of 39 sacred temples of mercy across western Japan. This list includes the 33 official temples of the pilgrimage, along with six additional temples known as *bangai* that are often visited by pilgrims. The temples are spread across eight prefectures: Kyoto, Nara, Shiga, Hyogo, Wakayama, Osaka, Gifu, and Nagano.
Notable temples on this list include Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto, Hase-dera Temple in Nara, and Engyō-ji Temple in Hyogo. Each entry provides details about the temple, its location, and its significance within the pilgrimage tradition. This collection allows travelers to explore these sites, understand their historical context, and plan their visits across the various regions.
The temples are not confined to a single area but are distributed across a significant portion of western Japan, from Wakayama in the south to Gifu and Nagano in the east. This geographical spread offers a diverse travel experience, encompassing different landscapes and local cultures.
